In 2015, Microsoft amalgamated their Microsoft Lync and Skype services, to create a unified product base. The name ‘Lync’ has been replaced with ‘Skype for Business’ to bring the service in line with the popular Skype branding. Amongst other things, this change will mean Lync / Skype for Business customers can now hold chats and web conferences with Skype consumer customers.
Skype for Business includes advanced conferencing and messaging services such as:
- Instant messaging
- HD video web conferencing
- Screen sharing and presentation options
- Active Directory integration
- Full IT admin control
The Microsoft Lync client on Windows and mobile platforms have been replaced with new Skype for Business apps, and a Mac OS X client app is in the works.
SMS recommend customers looking to start a Microsoft Lync subscription should take a look at Office 365 services which include Skype for Business. Existing Lync customers should also investigate if they can save by switching to Office 365.
