Google, in partnership with the University of Michigan and the University of Illinois, have conducted a multi-year study into email security trends, highlighting how security and privacy have improved since 2013.

The results are broadly positive, with the key points being:

  • Inbound encryption increasing from 33% to 61>#/li###
  • An increase in the use of TLS from 60% to 80>#/li###
  • More than 94% of inbound messaging using some form of authentication

The study only examined Google’s own Gmail service but due to the volume of emails handled the findings should be indicative of broader industry trends.

In the business email sector, security is a big concern. SMS’ KeyEncrypt service provides a completely secure email encryption service, which integrates with both Hosted Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Office 365 and delivers advanced features such as email tracking, at rest encryption, email revokation, and secure large file sharing.
